I got started at an early age. As a child, I used to make up melodies on my mini keyboard. Basically, the whole house was filled with music as my older sister played classical pieces on a 19th-century upright piano we used to have at home. When I was 9 I sang in a local church during celebrations and later I started to take vocal classes and perform at all sorts of song contests and festivals. It was when I first heard Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Ella Fitzgerald I felt the urge to sing and make music. Also, when I was a kid I listened to my dad’s vinyl records by Elton John, Queen, and Led Zeppelin, which blew my mind and got me into music. I took classes in singing, acting, and dancing at musical theatres. Later on, I studied at l’AULA Berklee College of Music. I was classically trained in piano, and then I started playing jazz, soul, and also pop music.

Q: Your latest single “Journey” has just been released. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the song?

A: I wrote this song back in September 2021. The lyrics came first, then I sat down at the piano and came up with the melody. I felt I needed some kind of change in my life, especially when it comes to the place I lived. That year I finally moved out of the old apartment. But that feeling stayed with me. A restlessness, uneasiness, an urge to keep looking for the right place, self-search. The production was largely inspired by Scandinavian music, specifically by the songs “Winter Bird” and “Running with the Wolves” by AURORA.
https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/1x6p4kdgVFzgCt8LyRkz32?si=ea7b3d65821842bc&utm_source=oembed

Q: Your music has been described as “eclectic” and “defiant melodic pop.” How would you describe your sound, and what artists have influenced you?

A: Emotional alt-pop with cinematic soundscapes, ethereal harmonies, daring lyrics and soulful beats. Some of my biggest influences have been artists such as Björk, Thom Yorke, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Kate Bush, AURORA, Lorde.

Q: You’ve mentioned that you want your music to be “valuable, lasting, and of help to others.” How do you hope your music will impact your listeners?

A: I hope that they will find a safe, comforting place in my lyrics and melodies. And that my music will have a cathartic, healing effect on anyone who listens. Hope that it’ll be their best company in the highs and lows of life. And hopefully it will make them feel empowered and emboldened to face any challenges and live in their truth.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your music career so far, and how did you overcome it?

A: Before I started to release my music I had a 9 to 5 job that was leaving me with little to no time for songwriting. I often came back home mentally exhausted and creatively drained. I decided to quit the job to focus on music only because I didn’t want it to be pushed into the background anymore. Then I discovered Twitch and built a wonderfully supportive community there that has helped me to make music my full-time job.

Q: You’ve released one EP and several singles. Do you have any plans for a full-length album in the future?

A: Oh yes, I’d love to put out a full-length album after the release of my sophomore EP. I have lots of songs written and have an idea of which of them I’d like to include on my debut LP record. I would like it to be truly a well-thought masterpiece so I’m taking my time to work on the visuals, the right production, and all the little details.

Q: You’re based in the UK but have fans all over the world. How does it feel to have such a global audience?

A: It feels wonderful! I’m so happy that people from all over the world connect with my music. I guess it’s thanks to the angels from Twitch and Instagram that I’ve been able to reach a global audience as well as thanks to publications in various international music blogs and magazines. Knowing that my lyrics resonate with people from remote parts of the world just warms my heart and inspires me, even more, to keep writing music.

Q: You’ve been featured in several publications, including Illustrate Magazine and Bored City. What has been your proudest moment as a musician so far?

A: The moment when I released my new single ‘Journey’ and received wonderful comments and messages from my audience on how it resonated with them. Also, seeing my single ‘Home’ getting lots of attention and reaching almost 60k streams on Spotify was one of the loveliest moments. And it was fantastic to read all the beautiful reviews on my recent singles by A&R Factory, CLOUT, Illustrate Magazine, Music Crowns, and other music blogs. As well as, the moment when I first heard my song being played out on some great British radio stations.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting out?

A: Believe in your art, keep writing new songs to practice your songwriting skills. Be consistent and open-minded. Try to always find the time to connect with your emotions and meditate. Find a quiet time just for yourself to disconnect and gain some perspective. Keep learning from others and improving your craft.

Q: What’s next for Camila Knight? Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or collaborations?

A: Oh, sure! Can’t wait to release the new singles from my second EP. They will be coming out in the next few months. Also, I’m working on the visuals for the music video! It’s going to be something very special. And I’ve been collaborating with some really amazing musicians on the new releases.
